With Buick bowing out of sedans, you should expect the General Motors brand to throw even more weight behind its crossovers and focus more on how these people movers look. Well, that seems to be the case with the second-generation Envision. This 2021 Envision looks sharper than the outgoing model and tacks on some desirable standard tech. Buick also revises the powertrain, dropping the naturally aspirated 2.4-liter and making the turbocharged 2.0-liter the only engine available.
The turbo four produces 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, down 24 hp from the outgoing model, which is surprising considering the engine shares a similar displacement. Looking at the torque figures, this I4 drops 37 lb-ft compared to the outgoing engine but hits that number at 1,500 fewer RPMs. While there are drops in performance relative to the outgoing model, the lower peak torque figure should make it feel peppier. Mated to the 2.0-liter engine is a standard nine-speed automatic.
Adding to the new styling, the list of standard tech makes the new Buick an even more interesting proposition. The new car sports standard LED headlights, taillights and running lights across the board. Standard safety tech like automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist and automatic high beams are included among the entire Buick Driver Confidence plus package. In that package, you’ll also find a forward collision alert, a lane change alert with a side blind zone alert, a rear cross-traffic alert and a rear park assist system. You can add other features like adaptive cruise control or a head-up display, but those will set you back some more cash.
Oh yeah, let’s not forget about the 10.2-inch touchscreen in the center of the Buick’s dash controlling the infotainment system. This big-screen system is a first for Buick, but likely won’t be the last. Buick’s also including special apps with the system like a Reese Witherspoon curated collection of audiobooks and podcasts.
