2017 Subaru Impreza: Quick take

New Subaru small-car platform promises to be safer, more agile

HIGHLIGHTS: The 2017 Subaru Impreza premieres the company’s new Subaru Global Platform architecture and gets a new grille, new headlights and -- like the current Impreza -- will be offered in both four- and five-door bodystyles. It’ll also feature a revised version of Subaru’s 2.0-liter Boxer four-cylinder engine making 152 hp as opposed to 148 hp in the current model. The new Sport trim gets 18-inch wheels, a sport suspension and Active Torque Vectoring. Subaru also says the sedan is safer, with 40 percent more crash energy absorption. The company’s EyeSight suite of safety features is optional and includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking and lane departure and sway warning, plus a lane keep assist function.

BASE PRICE: $20,000 (est.)

OUR OPINION: The Impreza is sometimes forgotten in a crowded compact segment, but with standard all-wheel drive, it’s worth a look.
