What is the best country to try and outrun the cops? Comoros, Africa, where the fastest police car in the country is a Zhongxing Grand Tiger topping out at a paint-blistering 50 mph. What’s the worst country to try and outrun the law? The United Arab Emirates, which has a police-cruiser Bugatti Veyron capable of 253 mph.

Take your pick.

Sifting through every country’s police fleet to pick the fastest cruiser in the lot is a pile of work. There are 195 countries, after all, and they all have police departments. Luckily, an Australian website called chasingcars.com.au just did it. Here’s what we and they came up with.

Top speed: 253 mph

The Veyron is the top of the heap in police cruisers, hitting 253 mph. Luckily for you, however, the car is not used for pursuits, just for public relations.

"We're not looking to just show off with the car, we're looking to show tourists how friendly the police are here in Dubai," Major Sultan Al Marri of Dubai police's General Department of Transport & Rescue told CNN in 2017. "We are looking for ways to connect with people all the time."

The UAE has by far the fastest fleet of cars of any police force in the world, with six of the top eight fastest cars. Those include, according to CNN: a bespoke Aston Martin One-77, of which only 77 were ever built, a Bentley Continental GT, three hybrid Porsche Panameras, and two BMW i8s. There's also a Nissan GT-R in there and even a W Motors Lykan HyperSport. So Dubai wins.

Where: Texas, United States
Top speed: 228 mph

Police in New Braunfels, Texas, acquired this Z06 during a drug raid. The department says the car had "aftermarket modifications for racing" that boosted output to 1005 hp and a top speed of 228 mph. Like the UAE's Bugatti, though, it's not used for pursuits but for community outreach.

"The vehicle is NOT used as a patrol car or for high-speed pursuits," NBPD emphasized on its website. "Instead, the vehicle is used as a community outreach tool in local parades, at school-related functions, during National Night Out, and other community events."

Aww, come on, Sarge, let me just use it once on a Code 3!

This cop car CLS was shown at the Essen Motor Show as a warning against cheap aftermarket knockoff tuner parts. Brabus says its CLS V12 S Rocket is equipped with a 730-hp V12 that will move the car from 0 to 62 mph in 4.0 seconds, from 0 to 124 in 10.5 seconds and from 0 to 186 mph in 29.5 seconds. The top speed is 224 mph. Don't try outrunning it!

Where: Japan
Top speed: 205 mph

"Bad news for the bad guys!" said Nissan's NISMO speed parts division. "The local police force in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, have held a ceremony to celebrate the delivery of a Nissan GT-R, which will be used as a patrol car in Japan."

So this one will track you down on the highway and pull you over. Carchaser says this police GT-R tops out at 205 mph. You have the right to remain silent. At least here in America. Who knows what rights you'd have in Japan after clocking 205 mph?

Update: They also have a Lexus LC 500.

Where: Italy
Top speed: 202 mph

Lamborghini donated a total of four Gallardos to police in Italy, the first in 2009. They were turned over to specially trained officers for patrolling and for tasks that required speed, like delivering organs to their recipients. Remarkably, only one was crashed, when an inattentive Seat Ibiza driver pulled out of a gas station without looking. Others put in as much as 93,000 miles of service before being retired. We should all do so well. Huracans came more recently into the fleet, also aimed at medical transport.

Spyker the brand has been around for more than a century, starting out making carriages, then cars, then airplanes, and then cars again. It was revived in 2000 (long story). But it resulted in at least one C8 Spyder going to police in Flevoland province, Netherlands. So lift off the throttle when you cruise in from Friesland now, ya hear?

Where: Devon and Cornwall, United Kingdom
Top speed:

As with some other departments, the Devon and Cornwall police use their Evora for PR.

"The Lotus Evora GT410 is on loan there for a year and is being used for community engagement," Lotus said. "It attends shows and motoring events to allow the police to discuss road safety with different audiences. Dorset Police also has access to the car.

"Sgt. Owen Messenger is a Roads Casualty Reduction Officer for the force and said: 'We've given the Evora a bespoke livery including full blue light rig—it's a real head-turner! It's popular with younger drivers because of its striking sports car looks, while the Lotus badge resonates with many people across the generations. It helps us talk to those audiences who are not always keen to engage with the police."

Another drug raid lead to the seizure of this C7 Corvette. This one was in Guatemala. Local reporter Soy_502 says the car is valued at 400,000 quetzals in Guatemala, or about $52,000. It will now be used by the National Civil Police. So don't speed in Guatemala!

Audi Hungaria Motor kft is a manufacturing plant in Gyor, Hungary, that makes Audi TTs, so it's only natural that the Hungarian police should get an RS or two to catch speeders. Carchasing lists top speed of these at 174 mph.

Volvo S60 Wagon

Volvo

Where: Latvia
Top speed: 159 mph

Volvo makes police versions of its S90, V90, V90CC, and XC90, with police chassis, reinforced brakes, police turnkey setups, bigger brakes, blue light configuration, siren, radio installation, police décor, and what it calls a maneuver system.

As Elwood Blues said, "It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch powerplant, it's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?"
